Advantages to Receiver Hitch Racks
- Easy to install.
- Less wind drag than Roof Racks.
- The bikes are kept away from the car so they don’t rub on the paint of the car.
- The rack only touches the car by slipping into the Receiver and either bolted or pinned to the receiver. The rack and bikes never touch the paint on the car.
- Receiver racks are easy to move from vehicle to vehicle as long as the vehicle has the right size receiver.

Disadvantages to Receiver Hitch Racks
- If your vehicle does not have a receiver it usually costs around $200 to have a receiver put on.
- You cannot haul a trailer when your rack is on your car, there are some specialty racks available that do allow you to do both. There are some receiver hitch racks made that allow you to pull a trailer with the bike rack installed.
- Like the Trunk rack and the Spare Tire Rack when your bikes are on the rack it is often hard to get into the back of the car.
Always check the manufacturers fit chart to make sure the rack will fit your car.
The Spare Tire mounted externally on your car can keep your receiver rack from fitting. Extended Receiver hitch racks are made to remedy this.

Platform Receiver Hitch Racks

Platform hitch racks mount to the receiver hitch on your vehicle.
They support the bike from the bottom with either Trays or wheel holders and then a clamp holds the top tube or the top of the wheels to keep the bike stable.
The Platform Racks are the latest style of rack and do a very good job of safely holding the bikes without damaging the paint on the bike or touching the paint on the vehicle.

If you want to carry nice bikes on your vehicle without worrying about scratching the paint on your car or on your bicycle the Platform Hitch racks can work very well.

This rack is a very good rack for most Receiver Hitch applications. If your vehicle has either a 2″ or one and one quarter Receiver this rack will fit. If you have a couple of different vehicles to mount this rack to it is easily adjusted to fit different vehicles. I like this rack a lot for carrying several bikes on your vehicle. It does not protect the bikes from rubbing on each other as well as the platform receiver hitch racks do but the rack is less expensive and does keep the bicycles from touching your vehicle.
The Hollywood HR8500 Receiver Hitch Rack is either a 1 1/4 or 2″ rack. It comes set up to work in either size receiver. This rack will hold up to four bikes but will work very well for one or two bikes also.
This picture is a closeup of the stinger that goes into the receiver in your vehicle. By removing one bolt you can convert this rack from 2″ to 1 1/4″ receiver.

This is a closeup of the lower part of the rack. There is a pin with a cable on it that allows the rack to pivot away from the back of your vehicle to allow you to open the rear hatch or door.

This is a closeup of the Hollywood 8500 arms. The bike holders have two straps on one side of the arms. One to hold the top tube of your bike and one to hold the seat tube. This keeps the bikes from moving around.

The picture below shows the pin you can pull out to lower the arms. This is handy if you want to leave the rack on your car when you are not using it so the arms do not stick out. It is also handy for storing the rack so it does not take up much space. The rack will hang easily from a hook on the wall in your garage.

This shows the rack with the arms folded down.

This Picture shows the Box the Rack comes in. It is very easy to assemble. It will take 5 to 15 minutes to assemble.

The Allen 440rr is a four bike 1 1/4 inch receiver hitch rack. This is a nice inexpensive rack. It assembles easily with 3 bolts and three pieces to assemble. Very simple clean design.
This is a picture of the Allen 530rr which is the same to assemble as 430, 440, 530, 540, 550 Allen racks. This series of racks have sold very well and they are very durable and simple to use.
Receiver Hitch Car Racks like the Allen 440rr are easy to mount and dismount from your vehicle. They keep the bicycles away from the car so you do not get your vehicle scratched up with the bikes. Putting the bicycle on the rack is quite simple, you lift the bike up and put the two supports from the rack inside the main triangle of your bike. Then you rest the bike on the rubber pads of the bike rack and stretch the bunji cord up over the frame of the bike.
Mountain Bikes and Road bikes and Children’s bikes can all be mounted to the rack. Ladies frames will often need an adapter to mount to this rack.
