If your local shop was an avid mountain bike shop they would have more 29ers. The new 29er frames are built to fit small people also. The other problem with 29ers right now is some of the larger manufacturers have not changed over and can not keep up with demand. The only hard tails over $1000 selling these days are 29ers. The high end market leads the mass market.

I'm not in the bike industry so I can't tell you what the sales are like. But I'll tell you what my preference is.

I like 26". This is why.. I'm lower to the ground and I'm steering a smaller wheel, which gives me more control. Remember those old bikes from the 1900's, with the GIANT front tire and little back tire? Same thing, you had no control. Also, you then need a smaller frame to accommodate your height. Unless you're 6' +, I don't think a 29er would make sense.

If I'm going over rocks, roots and sand, I want a lower center of gravity and less movement when I turn my wheel.

When I got into my local shop, I see 2 or 3 29ers and the rest or 26. I think it'll be a long time before you see WallyWorld stocking 29ers. They don't have anything over about $350, they're about price not quality.

That's my 2 cents!
