Saris Bones 3 Bicycle Car Trunk Rack

The difference between a Trunk rack and a Bumper rack is the Bumper rack rests on the bumper.  This rack is designed to rest on the vehicle trunk only or to rest on the bumper.  This is a very popular rack for several reasons.  It is simple to understand, it will mount on a very wide range of vehicles and it can be folded up to be fairly small when not in use.

  • Injection Molded arms are very durable.
  • Molded arms do not show scratches even after very hard use.
  • Built with recyclable material that will not rust.
  • Anti Sway Strapping system to help stabilize the bike.
  • The Arch design can adjust to fit over most spoilers.
  • The Arc design puts the bikes on different levels to make it easier to load.

Suggested List $159.95.

Unusual Trunk Mounted Rack

This is an unusual rack.  Most trunk mount racks are designed to me mounted and dismounted for each use.  This rack is designed to be mounted on your vehicle and to stay on.  It locks securly on your vehicle.  This is a great time and space saving feature because you do not need to take the rack off your car while riding your bike.

Bones RS with Folding Arms

The Arms that support your bicycle easily fold down out of the way when you are not carrying bikes on the rack.  This is not a common feature on trunk mount racks.

Comment by Rick

This is a very well designed rack.  A lot of thought was put into making the rack durable and simple to mount and use.  Designing a trunk mounted permanent rack is not only a great idea, Saris carried it out flawlessly.  I give the Saris Bones RS Trunk Mounted Bicycle Rack a very strong two thumbs up.

Hollywood Boomer Bar Ladies Rack Mount

Hollywood Boomer Bar Ladies Bike Car Rack Mount.  This is an outstanding way to mount Full Suspension or Ladies Bikes to Car Racks.  When you do not have a full length Top tube it is often really hard to install your bike on a car rack.  The Hollywood Boomer Bar quickly adapts your bike to fit most rear racks.  The Boomer Bar is padded where it touches the bike seat post and the handlebar stem to keep from damaging your bicycle finish.

All of the major car rack manufacturers including, Yakima, Allen, Hollywood, Thule manufacture a ladies bike car rack adapter.   They all seem to do the same thing and mount the same way.  Without these adapters sometimes it is nearly impossible to mount your bike to the rack.

Yakima KingJoe 3 Strap Mount Rear Car Rack

The simple hub adjustments on theis rack let you fold it up to fit in your trunk when not in use but you can quickly adjust it to fit your car. Six Straps hold the King Joe 3 to your car. Triple padded feet fit your vehicle well and will keep the paint from being damaged.

Comments by Rick:

I like this rack and would buy the KingJoe 3 as instead of the King Joe 2. The extra length of the arms on the three bike model make it easier carrying just two bikes also.  Chuck likes this rack.

Yakima Quickback 3 Trunkmount Bike Car Rack

September 12, 2009 by Rick · Leave a Comment

The Yakima Quickback 3 Trunkmount Bike Car Rack has a very unique method for adjusting to different vehicles. When I first saw how this worked I asked “Why didn’t I think of that?” The upper feet are mounted on bars that slide into the lower feet bars for adjusting. This telescoping idea works great.

All of the Yakima Trunkmount features are included in this their top of the line trunkmount, strap mount rack. The Narrow arm design, tri padded feet. The SwitchBlade antisway cradles help to cut down on bike to bike contact. Even if I only was going to carry two bikes I would buy the three bike model. You never know when you will pick up another rider and when carrying just two bike you have even more space between your bikes.
Suggested List:$199.00

Comments by Rick:
This is a top of the line trunkmount rack. I really like the design and how this rack works.

Yakima SuperJoe 3 Trunkmount Rear Rack

The Yakima SuperJoe 3 Trunkmount Rear Rack quickly folds for storage and the unfolds and adjusts easily to fit your car. The yakima Quick Trigger Hub system is used to adjust the arms of this rack. Three bicycle capacity but it works better for hauling one or two bikes. Yakima’s Narrow arm design allows most bicycles to easily fit on this rack. Six straps are used to attach this rack to your car which solidly stabilizes the rack to the car. This rack also includes the Glass Hatch Hooks if your car happens to need them. With most car racks this is an expensive accessory.  Suggested List $115.00.

Yakima Super Joe 2 Rear Mount Strap Rack

September 12, 2009 by Rick · Leave a Comment

The Yakima Super Joe 2 Trunk rack is a little heavier duty version of the Little Joe 3. The mainUpgrade from the LittleJoe is the Super has individual Bike “Stable Cradles” to stabilize the bikes on the rack. This system comes with the Six strap Stabilizing system so once mounted to your car the rack does not move. Yakima Narrow Arm design allows you to fit most bikes on this rack. The included Glass Hatch Hooks are excellent for fitting certain vehicles. Suggested List Price $95. Product # 8002616

Rick’s Comment:
This rack is a good step up from the LittleJoe, the bike stabilizing straps hold the bicycle on the rack very well. This rack folds quickly for storage using the Yakima Quick Trigger Hub System, like in your trunk, and then is quick to unfold and mount to your car. If I was carrying two bikes a lot I would step up to the Super Joe 3 to get more separation of the bikes on the rack. I would use the #1 and #3 position for carrying two bikes.

Yakima LittleJoe 3 Trunk Rack

The Little Joe Three is the entry level Yakima Trunk Rack. Yakima makes some of the most adjustable trunk racks on the market. I like this rack but the one piece top bar is not as adjustable to different vehicles as some other racks. If you are puttting it on a car with a trunk it works well. The bikes will need to be padded to keep from rubbing on each other. Fitting three bikes to this rack is a job. To just haul one bike it is quick and easy. If you do not care about the paint job on your bicycles, you can throw three bikes on this rack easily. The support legs easily fold up so when storing this rack it does not take up a lot of space. It is quick and easy to go from storage mode to the back of your car. This rack is much easier to adjust than the Hollywood F1B.

Comment by Rick:
The Yakima LittleJoe 3 is n OK entry level Trunk mounted Strap Rack for a reasonable price. I would go with a rack that separates the bikes with individual bicycle holders.

I have fitted this rack on a lot of cars in the last couple of years.  The reasonable price and the straight forward mounting system have made this one of our best selling car racks. I like that this rack rests on the top of the bumper and has three sets of stabilizing cords to hold it to the car.

Hollywood F4 Heavy Duty Trunk Rack

March 21, 2009 by Rick · 1 Comment

Comment by Rick Kern
The Hollywood F4 is a good Heavy Duty rack that positions the bicycle well away from the vehicle and high up for great ground clearance.  This rack works especially well with tailgates like on most of the SUVs, Vans and MiniVans.

Hollywood F4 Heavy Duty Trunk Rack

As its name implies, the F4 uses extra heavy Duty steel tubing and hardware, allowing it to carry up to 4 bikes. An exclusive dual positioning trunk/bumper system allows a custom fit on most sedans, SUVs and minivans. Motorcycle tie down buckles and extra side straps ensure a secure fit for heavy loads.

Hollywood F6 Expedition Trunk Rack

This rack will fit a lot of different vehicles.  The tall main support gets the bikes up well for ground clearance and the long front support allows this rack to fit a lot of vehicles with spoilers.  Rear Trunk Spoilers are often a major problem to get down in front of for Trunk Racks.  I also like the simple adjustability of this rack.

Hollywood F1B Trunk Rack

Our original 3 bike folding trunk rack, the F1B, is the virtually indestructible rack we designed back in 1973. Completely user friendly, this model’s multi-position hinges lock into place to fit practically any car, van or SUV.

“This is not my favorite rack. I have installed a few of them but adjusting the arms so the rack fits the car and the arms are pointed up about 15 degrees above horizontal is not always easy. I am much fonder of the Hollywood Express 3 rack. This rack will not fit most cars that have spoilers on them.   Rick Kern Bicycle Hangar”

The Hollywood E3 Express 3 bike trunk rack is a basic trunk mounted rack.  This is a nice inexpensive rack.  It will mount to most trunks or the back of most Vans.  Some Trunks are hard to mount to because of the spoiler.

Comment by Rick Kern

“If your car has a spoiler I would recommend this rack because it is tall enough to clear most spoilers.  Another rack that works well to clear spoilers is the Hollywood F6 Expedition. Rick Kern Bicycle Hangar”

Allen 303D Spare Tire Rack

February 24, 2009 by Rick · Leave a Comment

The Allen 303d Spare tire rack can be a double duty rack. It will also work on a lot of cars that do not have a spare tire mounted on the back. This is a very simple rack that will hold two or three bikes.  Often you can mount or dismount this rack quickly to your car. Many of the smaller SUVs have their spare tire mounted on the back of the vehicle.

If your SUV has a shroud around your spare tire this rack might not work.  The Hollywood SR1 Spare Tire Bike Rack will work on more different vehicles because it has a tighter fit to the vehicle tire.

The 303D is a fairly inexpensive car rack and if it fits your car will make a good basic rack. The qualilty of the SR1 from Hollywood is a bit better although it will usually cost about $20 more. The SR 1 does not mount and dismount as quickly as the 303D but usually the SR1 is left on the vehicle full time after it has been mounted.

Advantages To Trunk Mount Bicycle Car Rack

  1. Trunk Mount are usually cheaper than other types of racks.
  2. Simple installation.
  3. Easy to store when not in use.
  4. Many will fold up an fit in the Trunk when you aren’t using them.

Disadvantages to Trunk Mount Bike Racks

  1. If your car is dirty and you put a trunk mount on, the dirt under the rack feet will act like sandpaper and ruin the paint.
  2. Some Trunk Racks do not get the bike far enough from the car so the bike can rub on the car.
  3. You cannot attach the upper rack straps to a glass window. If your car’s back window opens and there is not a metal attachment point above that you cannot attach a trunk rack. Some of the older Camaros, Firebirds, Toyota 4 Runner have this design that will not allow you to mount a Trunk Rack.
  4. If your exhaust pipe points directly at the tires on your bike it can overheat the tire and ruin it.
Many racks do not separate the bikes well and the bikes will rub the paint off of each other.
You cannot access the back of the vehicle when you have bicycles on the rack.
  5. Some Cars have Spoilers or other issues that make Trunk Racks hard to mount.
  6. Many Trunk racks do not separate the bikes so they chew each other up.

Bumper Mount Car Racks

February 24, 2009 by Rick · Leave a Comment

Bumper Mount Car Racks are a lot like Trunk mount racks. The difference is the rack is not just supported by the straps holding the rack on the car but it also rests on the bumper.

Bumper mount racks are usually a little more expensive than the basic trunk mount but often they are a bit more stable. The bumper gives the rack a lower pivot point to hold the weight of the bikes and the rack. With a Trunk mount all of the weight of the bikes and the rack will be supported by the straps going to the top of the hatch or trunk.

Always check the manufacturers fit chart to make sure the rack will fit your car.

You can usually open your trunk with a Bumper mount or trunk mount rack on your car but not while the bikes are on the rack.

Both Trunk mount and Bumper mount bicycle racks are usually easy to mount and dismount after you have done it once or twice.

Many Bumper mount Bicycle racks will collapse to a fairly small size to store in your trunk or in your garage while they are not in use.
