  1. Allen 303D Spare Tire Rack

    February 24, 2009 by admin

The Allen 303d Spare tire rack can be a double duty rack. It will also work on a lot of cars that do not have a spare tire mounted on the back. This is a very simple rack that will hold two or three bikes.  Often you can mount or dismount this rack quickly to your car. Many of the smaller SUVs have their spare tire mounted on the back of the vehicle.

If your SUV has a shroud around your spare tire this rack might not work.  The Hollywood SR1 Spare Tire Bike Rack will work on more different vehicles because it has a tighter fit to the vehicle tire.

The 303D is a fairly inexpensive car rack and if it fits your car will make a good basic rack. The qualilty of the SR1 from Hollywood is a bit better although it will usually cost about $20 more. The SR 1 does not mount and dismount as quickly as the 303D but usually the SR1 is left on the vehicle full time after it has been mounted.

    Hollywood SR1 Spare Tire Rack.
This rack will fit most spare tires.

It has a narrower profile in fitting around the tire than most and will fit between the cover and the tire on some of the new SUVs that will not fit the Allen 303d. The strapping system that holds this rack on is very secure. The arms fold out of the way when you are not using the rack. This rack takes a bit of time to install the first time. Most people will leave this rack on the vehicle as it does not go on and off quickly on many vehicles.

This rack is very popular with the many mini SUVs. Most do not have enough room to mount the tire under the vehicle or inside so they mount the tire on the back door. This usually gives a good sturdy platform to mount a bicycle rack on. Many people will leave the rack on their car all the time with the arms folded in. This makes it really easy to just extend the arms of the rack and install the bike on it. Not having to mount and dismount the rack on the vehicle allows the Hollywood SR1 Spare Tire rack to be used a lot more than most racks that are stored in your garage.

  3. Roof Racks

    February 24, 2009 by admin

    Advantages to Roof Racks

    1. The bikes are well separated so they do not rub on each other or the car.
    2. You can pull a trailer and the bikes will not be in the way.
    3. The roof racks protect the finish on your car really well.
    4. Often there are a lot of other accessories to carry canoes, skis, snowboards etc. to fit the roof rack.
    5. Usually you can get a locking system for your rack and your bikes.

    Disadvantages to Roof Racks

    1. People have been known to forget the bikes are on the roof and run into the garage. This is really hard on the car, bike and sometimes the garage.
    2. Usually Roof Racks are quite expensive. Often it will cost over $400 for a two bike roof rack.
    3. Putting the bike on the roof can be a chore sometimes.
    4. The extra wind drag from the bikes above the car will significantly affect your gas mileage.
    5. Installing a roof rack can be a chore.

Always check the Bike Rack Manufacturers fit chart to make sure the rack you want will fit your car.

    Advantages to Receiver Hitch Racks

    1. Easy to install.
    2. Less wind drag than Roof Racks.
    3. The bikes are kept away from the car so they don’t rub on the paint of the car.
    4. The rack only touches the car by slipping into the Receiver and either bolted or pinned to the receiver. The rack and bikes never touch the paint on the car.
    5. Receiver racks are easy to move from vehicle to vehicle as long as the vehicle has the right size receiver.

    Disadvantages to Receiver Hitch Racks

    1. If your vehicle does not have a receiver it usually costs around $200 to have a receiver put on.
    2. You cannot haul a trailer when your rack is on your car, there are some specialty racks available that do allow you to do both. There are some receiver hitch racks made that allow you to pull a trailer with the bike rack installed.
    3. Like the Trunk rack and the Spare Tire Rack when your bikes are on the rack it is often hard to get into the back of the car.

Always check the manufacturers fit chart to make sure the rack will fit your car.

The Spare Tire mounted externally on your car can keep your receiver rack from fitting. Extended Receiver hitch racks are made to remedy this.

  5. Trunk Racks

    February 24, 2009 by admin

Advantages To Trunk Mount Bicycle Car Rack

    1. Trunk Mount are usually cheaper than other types of racks.
    2. Simple installation.
    3. Easy to store when not in use.
    4. Many will fold up an fit in the Trunk when you aren’t using them.

Disadvantages to Trunk Mount Bike Racks

    1. If your car is dirty and you put a trunk mount on, the dirt under the rack feet will act like sandpaper and ruin the paint.
    2. Some Trunk Racks do not get the bike far enough from the car so the bike can rub on the car.
    3. You cannot attach the upper rack straps to a glass window. If your car’s back window opens and there is not a metal attachment point above that you cannot attach a trunk rack. Some of the older Camaros, Firebirds, Toyota 4 Runner have this design that will not allow you to mount a Trunk Rack.
    4. If your exhaust pipe points directly at the tires on your bike it can overheat the tire and ruin it.
Many racks do not separate the bikes well and the bikes will rub the paint off of each other.
You cannot access the back of the vehicle when you have bicycles on the rack.
    5. Some Cars have Spoilers or other issues that make Trunk Racks hard to mount.
    6. Many Trunk racks do not separate the bikes so they chew each other up.

  6. Spare Tire Racks

    February 24, 2009 by admin

    Advantages to Spare Tire Racks

    Spare Tire Racks c

    1. Often they are the only rack that will fit the vehicle.

    Disadvantages to Spare tire racks

    1. They only fit vehicles with the spare tire mounted externally on the back of the car. This is usually the small SUVs.
    2. They do not fit many cars
    3. Many of the new Mini SUVs have fairings over their spare tire so some of the spare tire car racks will not fit.
    4. Not many Spare Tire Racks get sold so there are only a couple of companies that manufacture them. Often they are more expensive than a comparable trunk rack.

Always check the manufacturers fit chart to make sure the rack will fit your car.

The Externally mounted spare tire can make your receiver hitch rack not fit also!

  7. Platform Receiver Hitch Racks

    February 24, 2009 by admin

Platform hitch racks mount to the receiver hitch on your vehicle.
They support the bike from the bottom with either Trays or wheel holders and then a clamp holds the top tube or the top of the wheels to keep the bike stable.

The Platform Racks are the latest style of rack and do a very good job of safely holding the bikes without damaging the paint on the bike or touching the paint on the vehicle.

  8. Bumper Mount Car Racks

    February 24, 2009 by admin

Bumper Mount Car Racks are a lot like Trunk mount racks. The difference is the rack is not just supported by the straps holding the rack on the car but it also rests on the bumper.

Bumper mount racks are usually a little more expensive than the basic trunk mount but often they are a bit more stable. The bumper gives the rack a lower pivot point to hold the weight of the bikes and the rack. With a Trunk mount all of the weight of the bikes and the rack will be supported by the straps going to the top of the hatch or trunk.

Always check the manufacturers fit chart to make sure the rack will fit your car.

You can usually open your trunk with a Bumper mount or trunk mount rack on your car but not while the bikes are on the rack.

Both Trunk mount and Bumper mount bicycle racks are usually easy to mount and dismount after you have done it once or twice.

Many Bumper mount Bicycle racks will collapse to a fairly small size to store in your trunk or in your garage while they are not in use.

  9. Hollywood HR8500 Receiver Hitch Rack

    Comment by Rick Kern

This rack is a very good rack for most Receiver Hitch applications. If your vehicle has either a 2″ or one and one quarter Receiver this rack will fit. If you have a couple of different vehicles to mount this rack to it is easily adjusted to fit different vehicles. I like this rack a lot for carrying several bikes on your vehicle. It does not protect the bikes from rubbing on each other as well as the platform receiver hitch racks do but the rack is less expensive and does keep the bicycles from touching your vehicle.
The Hollywood HR8500 Receiver Hitch Rack is either a 1 1/4 or 2″ rack. It comes set up to work in either size receiver.  This rack will hold up to four bikes but will work very well for one or two bikes also.

This picture is a closeup of the stinger that goes into the receiver in your vehicle. By removing one bolt you can convert this rack from 2″ to 1 1/4″ receiver.

This is a closeup of the lower part of the rack. There is a pin with a cable on it that allows the rack to pivot away from the back of your vehicle to allow you to open the rear hatch or door.

This is a closeup of the Hollywood 8500 arms. The bike holders have two straps on one side of the arms.  One to hold the top tube of your bike and one to hold the seat tube. This keeps the bikes from moving around.

The picture below shows the pin you can pull out to lower the arms. This is handy if you want to leave the rack on your car when you are not using it so the arms do not stick out. It is also handy for storing the rack so it does not take up much space. The rack will hang easily from a hook on the wall in your garage.

The Allen 440rr is a four bike 1 1/4 inch receiver hitch rack. This is a nice inexpensive rack. It assembles easily with 3 bolts and three pieces to assemble. Very simple clean design.

This is a picture of the Allen 530rr which is the same to assemble as 430, 440, 530, 540, 550 Allen racks. This series of racks have sold very well and they are very durable and simple to use.

Receiver Hitch Car Racks like the Allen 440rr are easy to mount and dismount from your vehicle. They keep the bicycles away from the car so you do not get your vehicle scratched up with the bikes. Putting the bicycle on the rack is quite simple, you lift the bike up and put the two supports from the rack inside the main triangle of your bike. Then you rest the bike on the rubber pads of the bike rack and stretch the bunji cord up over the frame of the bike.

Mountain Bikes and Road bikes and Children’s bikes can all be mounted to the rack. Ladies frames will often need an adapter to mount to this rack.
